A steel foundry had a department that figured out the worker’s comp game. When employees were hurt over the weekend they would come to work on Monday and pretend to slip and fall, then would file a work comp claim fraudulently to receive benefits. The business absorbed a huge increase in work comp premiums because of the enormous amount of claims. Our in-house work comp broker moved the entire department to a 3rd party payroll and eliminated their claims experience and payroll amount, saving our client over $100K per year in premiums. We also implemented a hybrid group/individual employer paid/voluntary short-term disability and accident plan to reduce the risk of other employees following similar practices. With this hybrid strategy, the benefits cost to the employer was fractional.
